Forsyth County Parks Meeting Sheds New Light on Public Participation

Emil -- 14 June 07 -- Charleston Park and future home to Neil designed and flagged 5+ miles of singletrack abutting Lake Lanier has been on our club radar since we were asked to help the county build the Central Park trails in 2003. Tonight a few RAMBO members responded to a last minute request from Matt Pate, Forsyth County Parks Director, for a Charleston Park MTB trails plan "show of support". Conveyed by Neil Wagner, RAMBO trail master, we join 20 or 30 concerned neighbors in the county meeting hall with cushy seating and multiple strategically located screens which displayed Charleston Park with trail overlays on topos.

Selfless trail volunteers give so we may ride.
Trails don't build themselves. The governments hosting our trails don't build or maintain them. RAMBO & other volunteers do what it takes to create and work the trails that apparently many of us take for granted. Sure, these selfless folk share the benefits of camaraderie with riders of all degrees of MTB involvement, but you and I have to be inspired reading volunteer missives such as one from RAMBO workhorse Brad Wender after a recent Roswell Big Creek work party "...thanks to those that could make it Saturday. The weather was great, but I know lots of people had other things on their plates that morning..." after a light turnout during a holiday weekend. SORBA dues help, but trails will always require hands-on labor.

Rider & Driver Safety
Hey Everyone, Joe Baker forwards this great bike safety link. Both riders and drivers can share the road!

RAMBO's IMBA Trail building School & Graduates
Learn how to build sweet trails that stand up to heavy use, water and the test of time by joining an IMBA Trail building School near you. Hosted by an IMBA affiliated club, the schools combine classroom training, on-the-trail assessment, actual trail construction and maintenance work to prepare volunteers to become competent trail crew leaders. Topics include designing sustainable trails, managing water flow, building effective trail structures, and routine trail maintenance. Tool safety and usage are addressed, as well as tips on organizing productive volunteer trail days.

We are fortunate to have Mike and Jan Riter in our area, our first IMBA Trail Care Crew. They developed the trail building school that is now being taught all across the country. Jan and Mike personally taught the trail building school at Gainesville College, and Several RAMBO members are now "Certified Crew Leaders." Not only are they well educated on the construction and maintenance of trails, but they can teach others!

Congratulations to RAMBO's Certified Crew Leaders Stephen Mullins, Tom Carry, Jeff Adams, David Gipson, Bob Grieco, Kurt Terry, Jud Shumway, Robin Baumberger, Colin Smith, Jay Aiken, Chris Hoback, Cortland Plichta, Neil Wagner, Brad Wender for all their hard work and leadership.

Mountain Bike Patrol Program
3-2007 -- RAMBO's Mountain Bike Patrol Program is affiliated with the National Mountain Bike Patrol, International Mountain Bicycling Association, and the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association. Presently, Gainesville-SORBA, SORBA-CSRA and SORBA-Woodstock also have active patrollers.

The mission of the Mountain Bike Patrol program is to:
1) Maintain and promote trail opportunities for the sport of mountain biking through promotion and education.
2) Provide an on-trail presence of trained cyclists who inform, assist and educate mountain bikers and other trail users.
3) Promote responsible mountain biking through IMBA's philosophy of environmentally sound and socially responsible riding, embodied in the universally recognized IMBA Rules of the Trail.

Patrols provide an on-trail presence of trained cyclists who inform, assist and educate mountain bikers and other trail users. Patrols promote responsible mountain biking through IMBA's philosophy of environmentally sound and socially responsible riding, embodied in the universally recognized IMBA "Rules of the Trail." Emphasis is placed on emergency care education, mechanical assistance, environmental concerns, trail user etiquette, local expertise, and interaction with land management agencies.

Did you know this about trails... ?
"Walking and biking paths" ranked third among 39 features identified by home buyers as crucial factors in their home-purchasing decisions, according to a 1994 study by American Lives, a research firm serving the real estate industry. "Community designs that deliver low traffic and quiet streets" were ranked first, and "lots of natural, open space" was second.

Choosing a location that will help attract and retain key personnel was cited as the number one factor in selecting office locations (by a June 8, 1989 San Francisco Chronicle article), and corporate real estate executives now say employee "quality of life" issues are as important as cost when deciding where to locate a new factory or office.

RAMBO is helping improve the quality of life in Alpharetta and Roswell by working to preserve and create natural recreational opportunities. The Big Creek Greenway, and RAMBO's plan for trails branching off of it certainly make our cities better places to live.

C'mon people, please don't ride wet trails
What happens when trails are abused:
mtbr.com See this FATS trail closing post. We all like pedalling in, around and thru the tuff stuff - but think about erosion, its effects on the trail, and how we are perceived by others in our community the next time you consider riding a wet trail. Wait at least 24 hrs after a rain, longer after a hard freeze! Click here for more wet-riding enlightenment.

RULES OF THE TRAIL
- Ride on open trails only.
- Leave no trace.
- Control your bicycle.
- Always yield the trail.
- Never scare animals.
- Plan ahead.
- Safety First! - Helmets are required to ride the trail by the City of Roswell and SORBA.
- It is strongly recommended for your safety that you NEVER ride alone.
