REPORTS/EDITORIAL.
. .
WELCOME BigCreek FreeRide

RAMBO BigCreek FreeRide is now a special part of the RAMBO MTB community. We welcome all area freeriders with this message from RAMBO FreeRide board member Chris Warren...
Freeriding is a state of mind... a passion for discovering one's limits, and then pushing those limits to take you to new heights (literally!). Freeriding can free you, at least for a while, from whatever balls you up during the day.
Continue reading "WELCOME BigCreek FreeRide" Trek Demo Day @ Big Creek CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER January 4th, 09 Team Trek brings a trailer full of their latest mountain bikes 10 am - 4 pm (weather permitting). Get some ideas on how to spend your Xtra Xmas coal, or experience riding the way you'd always knew you could do. See which model best suits your size and style after putting them through your paces at Big Creek trails. Continue reading "Trek Demo Day @ Big Creek CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER" 2009 Officers Elected & Beers All Around* Dec 15 2008 -- Some familiar faces in new positions, and a new Freeride position was filled in last Thursday's RAMBO Nov 11th meeting. A couple a dozen (give or take) members showed up for the cause. Big contingent of new Freeriders chimed in to support all the goings on in the Big Creek Freeride area. Chris Warren squeaked by Shawn Brunner on one vote to become our new Freeride Area Coordinator. The 2009 BOD in no particular order:
Pres - Jay Aiken returns again (for more!)
NEW VP - Brad Wender is giving up the club's money bag to do the VP thing
NEW Treasurer - Brandon Donneker - we'll see how far the power of cheese takes Brandon this year as club banker
Trails Director - Neil Wagner returns again. Who else is going to remember where the Charleston Park trails are when the light changes?
Special Events - Mr. Organization, Joe Baker, returns again.
Marketing - Mike Young has proven his saavy with local media and setting up new member communications
Communications - Cortland Plichta returns again to keep our meetings on track, get the word out.
Web Guy - Emil Walcek returns again.
Membership - Neil Derryberry returns again to grow our ranks
Nightride coordinator - Bob Grieco returns again, at night!
NEW Bike Patrol - Kevin Griffith decided he could get out of his house more this year
NEW Freeride Area Coordinator - Chris Warren - new face, old hand at ridin' free
*Thx, Bob G, for the pitchers of beer that made our evening so congenial! Here's to trail money vaults! November meeting all about giving

17 Nov 08 - First, Jonathan Golden presented the story of Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee's involvement in the Sustainable Cycle project. Coffee bean harvesting got a bit easier with RAMBO's $250 check to put one more coffee bike into the hands of an independent Rwandan farmer. Highlight of the evening was a surprise presentation of RAMBO's first ever RAMBOteer award by president Jay Aiken to a deserving Brad Wender (aka Chef Brad) in recognition of his extraordinary volunteer efforts, including managing the mobile kitchen supplies for our weekend camp/ride events, RAMBO trails support, club treasurer, and all around club gadfly.
Nominations for 09 officers were advanced, with some new blood coming to the fore. Not as raucous as GA's Senator runoff, our election night Thusday 11 Dec 08 will be a lot more productive. See you at Tony's. Sorry folks - FATS Ride/Camp weekend cancelled Iffy weather and camp site reservation restrictions force us to cancel the RAMBO FATS Augusta, GA - NOV 15TH MTB weekend;(
Check back for other great RAMBO ride/camp-outs and events. Join us at Tony's tomorrow night for a good cry in our beers before we plan future rides. Night Rides at Big Creek It's that time of year, again, when real MTBers extend their riding day into the evening hours of fall/winter at Big Creek. Unlike most City of Roswell parks, the Parks & Rec Dept of Roswell opens Big Creek for one night a week for RAMBO-supervised rides. Starts right after DS time change. Registration is required. Go to the City of Roswell Parks & Rec page to download a full program, or register. The site's a little slow, patience. Proceeds come back to RAMBO for all we do at Big Creek.
Reminder: Bring a helmet and lights. All skill levels accommodated. Plan to join the night crowd afterwords for hearty merriment and libations at the eatery du jour. Big Creek Park is closed all other nights, and the Roswell Parks police will issue citations to violators.
One user's experience follows with registration advice... Continue reading "Night Rides at Big Creek" Usual Suspects aka Big Creek Trail Gnomes at it again

Brad & Neil work behind the scenes to enable all of us riders (like Michelle) to enjoy our backyard trails at Big Creek. Here, they've added a boardwalk over a troublesome spot in the trail. Premier Chat & RAMBO MTB day Chilhowee Mountain

Word's out: RAMBO outings are fun and fulFILLing. RAMBO says, let's do our cookout/ride at Dauset. Chattanooga chapter says com' on up our way at Chilhowee Mountain & we'll join you. Result: certainly our biggest day trip to date. Altho a final count of about 50 is only a guess, on accounta a good many folks hadn't yet made it up the mountain when we gathered for the group shot. Located in the South Cherokee National Forest, between Cleveland and Ducktown, TN, must of us met up at the Chillhowee Camp and day use area on top of the mountain. Splitting into groups, we fanned out to do all trails at all skill levels. Good flow with a good bit of rocks and roots to make the fast-flowing trails interesting.

12 June 2008 - Based on a few SORBA forum posts and a dozen pages of comments and logistics posts we were anticipating 30+ for RAMBO's big ridin and eatin day. We ended up with 40+ mtbers at the Raccoon Mtn - Laurel Point Picnic area trail head. Folks collected from all over at car-pooling points: Barrett Pkwy, Cumming, and Big Creek for a RTL time of 8 AM in order to meet a RTR 10:30 time to hit the trails. MarkD may have driven the furthest from Perry, and Robin came over from SORBA Mountain Town trail advocacy in Ellijay to join us for lunch. We actually started riding a little after 11 AM. Not too bad considering logistics included a picnic for all.

Friday - Sunday, June 20 - 22 Bike Camp weekend was by all accounts a success. Shared rides saved on gas and campground logistics. Weather held up perfectly with showers cooling off the area in the evenings. One blast mid day Saturday got a few big dogs wet on their second run up to Greens Slick. Evenings we collected for rousing recaps, stories of blood, mud, mechanics, gear and more. An epic weekend by all accounts. Did I mention Chef Brad's spread 3 x per day? We've got an album started here... check back for more pix as we get 'em. Check out Jason's, too. Can't wait for Tsali coming up later this Summer, FATS in the Fall. Contact Joe even if you're just thinking about joining us next time.

11 April 08 - What an experience to be allowed into a racer's world. Make no mistake, it is another world Monique "Pua" Zawicki and her husband Ron exposed to some 30+ of us RAMBO members at last night's meeting. Machines! That's what they are. Lovable, awesome, inspiring personalities that are, above all else, machines driven to compete and win. And the bike is but one component.
To paraphrase the great F. Scott, 6, 12, and 24 hour straight endurance MTBers are different from you and I. Pua and Ron are the leading edge of their team Mata <teammata.com> that includes the combined skills of a manager, sponsors, a nutritionist, trainer, doctor and others that make sure Pua stays in the zone to win.
Shortly after an introduction by our own infamous Bruce Dickman, Pua followed her husband, Ron, with a simple gesture that circled round her youthful head to describe the real focus of a pro: the mind. And, as we stuffed ourselves with fare from Tony's Bar and Grill we listened as Pua described the ultimate importance of carefully controlled recipes of nutrition before, during and after a race. We learned a secret for succeeding in such endurance events, "Don't sit down. If you do, you're finished."
A spirited Q & A session was followed by door prizes, and Pua signing Ellsworth/Pua posters. We picked up many pointers we mortals could put to use in bike fit, riding technique, nutrition, and equipment.
Now, let's ride with Pua as she and Ron make their rounds in GA!
--Sunday, April 13, 11am at Mullberry Gap in Ellijay. $10 fee.
--Monday, April 14, Blankets Creek. Ride area 51!!! Woodstock Chapter meeting will follow with FREE cookout.
--Tuesday, April 15, Peachtree Bikes with Team Sorrella.
2 Ways in a Day Time Trial Report 08
Was it going to rain, or not? Conflicting reports were mulled throughout the days and hours leading up to the 2nd Annual* Big Creek Two Ways in A Day Time Trial event held this past Saturday, 29 Mar 08. Nevertheless, RAMBO volunteers gambled for the best and got everything they hoped for in an ideal day for running this speed trial where MTBers race against themselves and an official stop watch around the entire 6 mile outer loop. Come back to our gallery often as it gets updated. Until then, take a gander at some of the times by the champs of the event:

Lots of swag dwarfed the 10 buck entry fee for all entrants. And a free lunch at the Chez Brad put a smile on all participants' mugs. Cannondale demo bikes were available for free trial. Roswell Bicycles staff were on hand to talk shop, tweak bikes.
All-in-all a great day and a great RAMBO fundraiser. It turns out the RAMBO/SORBA affiliation with IMBA had a major impact on memberships, too... we could accept payment by credit cards for the first time. 21st century, here we are! We're already mulling over ideas for next year. Look for a shorter kids' course category. Come to our next meeting 9 April 08 to vent, praise, and/or share a new idea for this or other future RAMBO gatherings. Volunteers needed!
Thank you, RAMBO event sponsors! Thank you, RAMBO volunteers! * This event follows the first 2 Ways in A Day event held in conjunction with the formal grand opening of the Big Creek trails as we know them on a brrrr-cold day in Nov 06
